Infection in the spine can originate rom the bones of the spine or intervertebral discs. The most common cause is bacterial or tubercular. Pus can accumulate between the spinal cord (or nerve roots) and the vertebral bones. In the cervical and thoracic regions of the spine, it can press against the spinal cord. In the lumbar region, it can press against the nerve roots. It can lead to a spinal epidural abscess which can cause problems throughout the body. Sometimes it can be following a surgical procedure to your spine.
