Lumbar Puncture

This is a simple procedure that is performed under local anaesthesia to study cerebrospinal fluid. It is used to diagnose infection of the brain (meningitis), bleeding in the brain (subarachnoid haemorrhage). It can also be used as a test for Normal pressure hydrocephalus before proceeding to ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

This is a way to get a sample of your cerebrospinal fluid (which we call "CSF"). That's the fluid that flows around your brain, spinal cord and spinal nerves. Testing this fluid will show signs of bleeding, infection or other problems.
